Strategic Advisory
Your firm has evolved. Has the business behind it?
The work gets better. Projects become more complex. Teams grow. Services expand. Clients change. New technology enters the picture. But the positioning, website, portfolio, marketing, client experience, and internal systems supporting the firm often evolve much more slowly. The result is a disconnect between the firm you have become and the firm the market sees.
The AJD Strategic Audit brings an informed outside perspective to these questions, combining design-industry experience, competitive research, digital analysis, and strategic evaluation to identify what is working, what is getting lost, and where focused changes could have the greatest impact.
5 Weeks · $5,000
Great design deserves a strong business behind it.
A five-week strategic evaluation of the business behind the design.
The AJD Strategic Audit is designed for established interior design and architecture firms that want a clearer understanding of where they stand today and where the strongest opportunities exist for the future. Rather than examining one piece of the business in isolation, the Audit looks across the places where brand, business, design, technology, and client perception intersect.
The process combines leadership input, firm materials, competitive benchmarking, digital analysis, portfolio evaluation, market research, and emerging technology assessment.
The goal is not to leave you with an exhaustive list of everything that could change. It is to identify what matters most.
At the conclusion of the engagement, your leadership team receives a clear view of the firm's current position, its most significant opportunities, and a prioritized roadmap for what should happen now, next, and over the coming year.
Program Features
-
How clearly does the market understand who you are?
Strong firms often have a much clearer sense of their identity internally than they communicate externally.
We evaluate how effectively your positioning reflects the caliber of the work, the clients you want to attract, and the direction in which the firm is growing.
We examine:
- Brand positioning
- Differentiation
- Core messaging
- Service positioning
- Ideal client alignment
- Market perception
- PositioningThe goal is to understand not only what you say about the firm, but what a prospective client is likely to conclude from what they actually see.
-
Where does your firm sit, and where is there room to own something different?
Your competitors provide context. Your aspirational peers provide perspective. And the space between them can reveal opportunities.
We benchmark your firm against a focused set of direct competitors and aspirational firms to understand how others are positioning themselves, presenting their expertise, communicating services, building visibility, and competing for attention.
We examine:
- Direct competitors
- Aspirational firms
- Market positioning
- Messaging patterns
- Service positioning
- Portfolio presentation
- Digital presence
- Content strategy
- Authority + visibility
- Competitive whitespaceThe objective is not to imitate what other firms are doing well.
It is to identify where the market has become repetitive and where your firm has a credible opportunity to stand apart.
-
Does your digital presence reflect the caliber and direction of your work?
For many potential clients, collaborators, recruits, journalists, and partners, your website becomes their first meaningful interaction with the firm.
We evaluate how effectively that experience communicates who you are, what you do, why your work matters, and what kind of projects you want to attract next.
We examine:
- Website experience
- Messaging clarity
- Service clarity
- Portfolio strategy
- Project selection
- Project storytelling
- User journey
- Conversion opportunities
- Search + discoverability opportunities
- Mobile experience
- Technical website healthWe also look closely at whether your portfolio supports the future of the firm, rather than simply documenting its past.
-
Are you turning your expertise into visibility?
Beautiful work creates credibility. But visibility is what allows that credibility to travel beyond the people who already know your firm.
We evaluate how effectively your firm turns its projects, expertise, people, ideas, and accomplishments into sustained market presence.
We examine:
- Social media
- Content mix
- Thought leadership
- Founder or leadership visibility
- Press
- Awards
- Speaking opportunities
- Industry involvement
- Partnerships
- Testimonials
- Email + editorial content
- Referral visibilityThe focus is not simply on how often your firm posts. It is on whether your marketing is building recognition, authority, and a distinctive point of view.
-
Does the way clients encounter and engage your firm support your positioning?
A firm's brand is experienced long after someone leaves the website. It appears in the inquiry response. The consultation. The proposal. The onboarding process. The project experience. The way information is communicated. And the way the relationship concludes.
We evaluate a focused portion of your client journey to understand whether the experience supports the level of expertise, service, and positioning your firm wants to communicate.
We examine:
- Inquiry experience
- Consultation
- Proposal + service communication
- Onboarding
- Design-process communication
- Client expectations
- Approvals + decision-making
- Closeout
- Referral opportunities
- Service structure
- Additional service opportunitiesThe Audit does not provide legal, accounting, tax, or financial advice. Recommendations involving contracts, pricing, payment structures, or business operations are strategic in nature and should be reviewed with the appropriate professional advisors.
-
Is your firm prepared for how design work is changing?
The design industry is moving quickly. AI, visualization technology, automation, new project-management tools, knowledge systems, and changing client expectations are reshaping how firms research, communicate, document, market, and deliver work.
The question is not whether your firm should use every new tool. It is where technology can meaningfully make the firm smarter, faster, more informed, or more effective.
We examine:
- AI integration
- Visualization workflows
- Research processes
- Project management
- Marketing technology
- Client communication
- Knowledge management
- Documentation workflows
- Repetitive administrative tasks
- Emerging design toolsThe result is a focused Future Readiness assessment identifying practical opportunities worth exploring, rather than technology for technology's sake.
5-Week Strategic Audit Process
0/ Onboard
We begin by establishing the goals, priorities, and context for the audit. Through an initial questionnaire, kickoff conversation, and collection of key materials, we build a clear understanding of your firm and what you want to achieve.
1/ Discover
We look outward, examining competitors, aspirational firms, industry trends, digital presence, marketing, pricing, and other relevant benchmarks to understand the landscape surrounding your firm.
2/ Investigate
We take a closer look inside the firm (its positioning, services, clients, processes, challenges, and ambitions) to understand where you are today and where you want to go.
3/ Evaluate
We assess what we’ve uncovered to identify strengths, inconsistencies, gaps, missed opportunities, and areas with the greatest potential for meaningful improvement.
4/ Synthesize
We turn insight into action with a prioritized roadmap of recommendations, next steps, and opportunities—giving your firm a clear path forward beyond the audit.
5/ Activate
We connect the findings across the audit, separating isolated observations from larger patterns and translating the research into clear strategic priorities.
